Tips - Images

Images Tips
Raster Images can be used extensively within an AutoCAD drawing.  You can also export your drawing to one of several image formats.

Some examples of how images are used in AutoCAD.

  • Insert Georefereced Aerials using AutoCAD Map.
  • Insert a scanned paper drawing, scale it, then digitize it.
  • Insert an image as an OLE object.  This embeds the image so you don't have to worry about broken links when you send your file to someone else.  I have seen this most often used in title blocks.
  • Export an image from a dwg file. There are many reasons to create images from dwg files, to illustrate a document or web page, to create graphics in a raster format for use in other graphical editing programs like Photoshop.

Extracting an Image from a PDF File (6 minute movie)
See how to create an image file from a pdf file; how to change the AutoCAD background from white to black; how to insert the image in AutoCAD; and how to scale the image. (added 12-21-2007)

Here is another example extracting a color image from a pdf. The important part is to zoom to 100% before you capture the image to the Windows clipboard.  You can scroll while dragging your mouse to capture the image.

Save images of your drawing from AutoCAD using PNGOUT or JPGOUT or BMPOUT commands. (WYSIWYG)

Enable the use of MrSID and ECW files in Map with the Raster Design Object Enabler.  Are your
georeferenced images in the wrong coordinate system? Raster Design will reproject those images as you insert them. There is much more that Raster Design can do. Why not download a
free trial.

Running out of plotter memory?  When you plot a drawing containing an image, an aerial photo for example, you may only get a portion of your drawing plotted.  As a work-around, try plotting to a DWF file then printing from Design Review to your plotter.
