3D Modeling:

Strategy for 3D Modeling of Existing Conditions

There are countless benefits to utilizing existing data if it has been developed into a 3D model.  For Architects it may be renovating an existing building and having the new construction fit together with the existing building components.  Problems can be resolved digitally rather than the more expensive surprises that arise during construction.  The same principal applies to other disciplines such as industrial design, process piping, civil infrastructure, and the list goes on.

Your source data may come from a laser scanner in the form of a point cloud, it may be just digital photos, or conventional survey methods.   Everyone is looking for ways to reduce costs.  Your first question is "Do I need to model or can I just use the raw data as is?  As a cost saving measure learn ways to incorporate raw data without having to "digitize" it.

Let's assume you have decided there is a need to create a 3d model.  Learing some basic solid modeling techniques in AutoCAD or Revit can go a long way toward getting the job done.  These techniques can complement the 3d data you can generate using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD Architecture.  Below is a collection of videos that can help you learn the basics of solid modeling in AutoCAD.

InteliSum

Speed is the key to any engineering workflow.  InteliSum's Hardware and Software tools are built for speed, greatly reducing the modeling process with the InteliCamera's Instant 3D Models.

LD3 Studio's Desktop survey tools allow for instant measurements, validation, and integration with major CAD Softwares.

Here is the difference.  InteliSum's LD3 Studio allows you to work inside Photorealistic 3D models.  You will find this environment is much easier and more accurate than the fuzzy world of traditional point clouds.
Visit the InteliSum web site to watch videos and get more info on LD3 software and the InteliCamera technology.

Are You Using Civil 3D to Create Surfaces for Machine Control?
We are currently helping engineers and excavation contractors build sites using machine control.
The site shown below was modeled and graded the week of April 7, 2009.
Call 407-365-1595 to find out how you can learn to create surface models using Civil 3D.
